| Bonk: The Curious Coupling of Science and Sex by Mary Roach |
Rome the HBO Series |

| I’m about 30 pages into this book and already I love the nerdiness of the scientific reporting and the humor of the author. If you want to know all about how science began its foray into the world of sex, this is the book for you. Where else are you going to find out that Masters and Johnson made a mechanical phallus with a camera attached in order to study the female orgasm? (July 23, 2008) | Highly fictionalized, violent, bloody and filled with gratuitous nudity. Excellently acted, written and produced. We zipped through the entire two-season series in a matter of days. If you watch, you must use the “All Roads Lead to Rome” feature where factual tidbits about life in Ancient Rome pop up to explain gestures, historical fact, etc. Highly recommended. (July 1, 2008) |

EF 50mm f/1.8 II Camera Lens by Canon |

| I’ve been a longtime user of Canon cameras. My first real camera was a standard Canon Rebel which I bought as a high school graduation gift for myself in 1995. I still have it and it takes fantastic photos. Last year I bought a Canon PowerShot and it’s served me incredibly well. The moral of my story, after everything I read, is that more than the brand of camera, the lens is what will matter most. The new Canon has already proven itself to me because I took one picture of Carson and she looked like an angelic kitten rather than a rotten little asshole who somehow managed to pee underneath her litter box last week. (see previous purchases - coming soon) |
When I was doing camera research, I came across a post by David Lebovitz about what equipment he uses to photograph food for his website. He mentioned this lens and, at just under $90, I didn’t think I could pass it up as one of the first that I purchased for my new camera. Admittedly, it’s not incredibly sturdy and will likely need to be replaced every few years depending on how heavily I use it, but it takes fantastic photographs. I’ve already decided to use it as my default in place of the kit lens. (May 22, 2008) |

| Janie is usually the big caramel eater in the house, which is why I picked this up for her one day several weeks ago. I had a few bites and it didn’t take long before the salty goodness of the caramel ribbon and the chocolate coated caramel squares won my heart over. If I had no shame, I’d eat this for lunch every day. (July 23, 2008) | Janie and I don’t really celebrate Valentine’s Day because our anniversary is a few days beyond. We keep it low key, this year opting to enjoy some chocolate covered strawberries, pear slices and kiwi with a small glass of Cascinetta Vietti’s Moscato D’Asti. I don’t drink, save for the occasional holiday glass of champagne, and more often than not I can’t get past the first sip without gagging. It’s all those wild nights as a young partier coming back to haunt me. If I have a drink, it needs to be sweet and without the bite of alcohol. That’s why I like this Moscato D’Asti in place of champagne. It’s sweet, fruity and just the right amount of bubble for a quiet evening at home, trying to get Janie to take off her shirt. | The Essential Leo Kottke Collection Leo Kottke |
Tiles for the master bathroom |

| Many years ago, way back when I had my first job at Blockbuster Music, I discovered the music of Leo Kottke, whom I consider to be the world’s premier acoustic fingerpicking guitar player. He’s brilliant, and the Essential album is just that, essential. Everyone needs to own this. Not only will you enjoy every last song, from the over too soon Up Tempo to Buckaroo, which reminds me of some of the best summer days I’ve ever had, but you will be wondering why you never learned to play the guitar. It’s never too late to start. (August 8, 2008) | The fuckers that we bought our condo from re-tiled the shower in our master bathroom, but after a few years of living with it, I’ve realized that they did a crappy job - which shouldn’t be surprising considering all the other shoddy work they did around here. This summer, my goal is to re-tile the shower, replace the hardware and shower door, and then paint the bathroom and install new lighting. Janie is not looking forward to this, because when something goes wrong - and something will because something always does - she’ll have to talk me out of my wild hysteria and agonizing that my life is ruined. RUINED! (July 1, 2008) |

Spirits and Cocktails by Jamie Boudreau |

| I need to find some nice slippers for my dad. He wants to be able to wear them outside to get the paper, take out the trash and run a long-distance foot race. The one pictured/linked might be too shoe-ish, I’m thinking. (December 12, 2007) | For someone who doesn’t really drink, I often wonder if I like this site a little too much. I’m fascinated by people who are interested in a particular topic to a degree bordering on obsession. Jamie Boudreau is one such person, with his seemingly limitless knowledge of spirits and an unquenchable thirst for understanding and perfecting his craft. His recipes and photos are often enough to make me wish he were back at Vessel mixing up his best cocktails so that I could wander in after work for a sip. I can’t tell you how often I have considered mixing up a batch of bacon-infused bourbon to tempt Janie into removing her shirt. (July 23, 2008) |

| Chamomile and lemon verbena scented fabric softener Downy |
|
![]() |
| I picked this up from Target a few months ago as a change from our regular lavender and vanilla fabric softener. I absolutely love this. It is like smelling springtime every time I put my clean clothes on. Throughout the day I will catch a whiff of my sweet smelling clothes and it just makes me smile. Next time you see me, smell my shirt. You won’t regret it. (March 16, 2008) |
