This photo was taken 29 years ago. I turned three years old and got a delicious cake made from a box (yellow cake, chocolate frosting – still a favorite!), a faux fur coat and a musical teddy bear. (My mom gave all three of us the same haircut for many years, until that one time I got hold of some craft scissors.) Three was among the great birthdays of my life and while 32 isn’t mind-blowing – I didn’t get my driver’s license (16) or throw up on my sister’s face at a bar (21) – I did get to spend it with the people I love the most. Also, I got a stove top smoker from my beautiful and loving wife, awesome gifts from my sister, brother-in-law and parents, a message from my friend Carrie, delivered by her 10 year old son, holiday cookies baked by Leah at daily piglet and delivered by UPS, and a voice mail from my heterosexual walking life partner, Dana, which included a song made from scratch by the joy in her heart. Also, I didn’t get shot. Today was a good day.

Hot DAMN you are so cute in that picture. For the record, I too had yellow cake with chocolate frosting this year. I never actually heard what Birthday Greetings E left for you on my behalf, so if he told you to kiss off or anything like that I’m sorry.
