Bulk

26 November 2008 294 views 7 Comments

Why hasn’t anyone ever bothered to tell me?  Was it because you wanted it all for yourselves, you greedy little monkeys?  Because, seriously, you don’t need that much nutmeg.  Nobody does.  That’s the god damn joy of bulk spices, there is some for everyone and it’s practically free.

Tonight I bought cinnamon in bulk at the recommendation of my sister, who let me in on the little secret about how those jars at the grocery store filled with spices that cost nearly $10.00?  Yeah, they’re like $0.50 for the same amount when you go to the store down the street that will sell it in bulk form.  Why is this brand new information to me!?

I hate each and every one of you for never telling me about this.  But I’m pardoning you, like “Pumpkin” the turkey was pardoned by that assclown in the White House today, because tomorrow is Thanksgiving here in America and that’s what we’re all about – thanks and forgiving.   So I forgive you all.  Except for that one guy.

I swear I told you about this when I bought the cardamum at Metropolitan Market. That shit cost me $0.40 when it would have been $15.99 at Safeway. I loves me some bulk spices. I am SO sorry if I never told you. You promised to forgive!

It never occurred to me to buy spices in bulk, and now I’m sitting here thinking “duh!”. I’ll definitely have to peruse the bulk section a bit more carefully at my usual haunts. Especially since my parents up and moved out of state a few weeks ago, so now it appears that I’m going to be in charge of Christmas. Um, what?!!

I never told you because spices in bulk are of a very inferior quality to spices that cost money. They can get away with selling a lot of crap in bulk that may only have a small percentage of the actual spice/herb in the mix of stuff. Same with no-name spices. Also the volatile oils are what give spices their flavour and aroma and they need to be locked in (as in a glass container) or they lose their potency. Growing and drying herbs and spices is a delicate operation, like wine making. You can buy a good bottle of wine with a cork for a lot of money or you can buy a cardboard box of wine for a little money. You gets what you pays for.

XUP – you’re right. i can see that. i wouldn’t buy spices in bulk for things that Janie would have because it’ll likely have gluten in it, but for other stuff, for things like cinnamon or pepper, can it really be that bad of an idea, especially if you only need a 1/2 teaspoon of something you won’t likely use again? But I absolutely agree – I didn’t think of it that way.

No, I guess if you’re only getting a teensy bit, what the heck. It might not taste like it’s supposed to, but it will give you the general idea.

i had no idea of this either. i grow my own spices. not nutmeg mind you but i have no idea how to cook with it either.

The only think I know about nutmeg is that you can cook it and get high somehow. Not that I’ve done it…I learned it in school. Seriously.
