The Oregon State Hospital, where One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest was filmed, is being torn down. What’s more fascinating than the demolition is the story of the hospital itself, including these tidbits:
- 91 mental patients were hired as extras during the filming of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.
- The film’s director lived at the hospital for six weeks and encouraged actors to spend time with the patients.
- In 2004, lawmakers touring the facility came across a storage room holding copper cannisters containing the the cremated remains of 3,600 mental patients dating back to the 1880’s.
