Janie and I recently went camping and on the way home we drove to the Maltby Cafe for breakfast. We’d heard a lot about it and were eager to drive nearly an hour out of the way just to check it out. While waiting for our table, we wandered to the antique store across the parking lot and I snapped a few pictures, including these two mannequins. I was charmed by the beards - they reminded me of these dolls I had when I was younger, with hair that looked like hairplugs. I’d always been fascinated with how perfectly arranged the rows were of their faux manes. If I’d had the resources, I’d likely have shaved those baby dolls much like these mannequin faces.

This reminds me of how I treated my Cabbage Patch. I pierced her ears & nose and gave her some pretty crazy make up that turned to be permanent. I grew up to have piercings and although I don’t normally wear make up, I do have tattoos. I wonder if the way our dolls come to us and what we in turn do to them should be like little warning signs to our parents of how we will turn out? Wait - E says his stuffed animals like to have late night parties that wake up the non-partying animals - is this what *I* have to look forward to?!

Well, my sister’s Barbie dolls all had shaved heads because I was performing delicate “brain surgery” on each of them. And look at me - my parents never had to worry about my being a brain surgeon. What a relief they must have felt when I pursued a degree in Humanities.

Yes, but Janie’s folks should be worried about the lobotomies you try and practice on her while she sleeps…
